holidays and flights. The site was split into two main sections- an administration section and the users section. The administrator would be authenticated which would allow him to add and amend holidays in the main database. A start and end date that described when the offer was valid could be added. This allowed for a large volume of holidays to be entered at one time and then when the appropriate holiday became valid it would be shown on screen to the users. When a holiday became out of date it would not be shown.
The front-end was built in Flash which allowed animated scrolling of holiday information. Users had the functionality of keeping a shopping basket that contained all the holidays they were interested in. At the appropriate time they could browse the details of these holidays. Furthermore, the site had a scrolling list of the latest offers on the home page. Latest offers were a sub-set of holidays which the administrator had chosen and marked in the administration section.

Project: A GIS for the whole UK, to manage spatial data and project management information
This Geographic Information System(GIS) allowed different levels of users to access different levels of spatial information. Certain users could create new spatial information while others could only run queries. The queries would be returned as Excel documents which could then be displayed as required.
The system had layers of security. The security model was based around Active Directory Services (LDAP) for authentication, and a role/security level based model for authorization. This enabled all Ordnance Survey users to be authenticated, but allowed administrators the ability to control who does what on the live system. The System Administrator was able to add and amend critical data that would effect how the whole system behaved. Some users could view certain information while others with higher security could access a larger sub-set of information.
The basic architecture used was ArcSDE on top of an Oracle 8 database, using ArcIMS as the map server. Client software was built using JSP, Javascript, XML/XSLT and HTML. Server-side software utilized Servlets, Java classes and some Java beans. Transactional components had been built using conventional Java objects since much of the transactional work involved using conventional database and spatial database elements together. Connection pooling was used to maintain efficient access to the databases. The build configuration was coordinated using Ant and CVS.
The web server used was Oracle 9i AS, using arcIMS as a map server and an ArcSDE layer for spatial queries. The framework used is a MVC architecture, using JavaBeans and classes for most of the functionality, forwarding requests on to JSP /HTML or XSLT pages for display on the browser.
