This was an 8 week 2nd / 3rd line support contract providing Checkpoint, Nokia, F5 Big IP and RSA support in French and German to UK and European household names such as Audi, and BAA. Working at Integralis was a privilege which gave me unprecedented access to Checkpoint and Nokia.

 

COMPANY: ALLIANZ CORNHILL INSURANCE / VISTORM

POSITION: SECURITY CONSULTANT / ANALYST

DURATION: JANUARY, 2007 to MARCH 7th, 2007

 

This was a short-term contract as a senior security analyst and involved security consultancy to the Systems Development Projects Team and the management of all the Company?s Checkpoint and Cisco Pix firewalls.

In this position I managed the internal network and staff and also conducted Pre and Post-Sales engagements. This was a project contract for my local NHS hospital providing advice on Group Policies and Infrastructure issues and security (CheckPoint, ISA and Sonic Wall).

 

COMPANY: GENESIS HOUSING GROUP (with Badenoch and Clark)

POSITION: Migration Project Consultant

DURATION: OCTOBER ? NOVEMBER 2005, Short Term Contract

 

Genesis Housing Group employed me to provide project management and technical consultancy on their migration of 1650 users over 3 physical sites from NT and Exchange 5.5 to Server 2003 / Exchange 2003 with full use of FSMOs, Routing Groups, ADMT, Schema Design, DNS, DHCP scopes with VMWare for labs and Dameware / GPMC for consolidated management. Duties also included:

 

Building, configuring and monitoring c. 50 generic and IBM 346 and Compaq Proliant DL140 and DL 380 2U racked E-Servers

Ground-up building of 2 new Terminal Servers

Troubleshooting, reconfiguring and maintaining over 100 printers on 3 servers

Monitoring mail with Mail Marshall

Managing security with a Cisco Pix firewall

Configuring and monitoring enterprise backups with DLT 4 and Ultrium tape drives

Configuring and monitoring Blackberry server for 30 users (v. 4.0)

Recovering from RAID disasters with Powerquest v2i

Oracle / SQL / Agresso monitoring and backup

VoIP configuration of AlwaysOn Virtual Telephony

Assisting the help desk team and helping to ensure SLA designates are met

 

COMPANY: RESPONSE TEAM LIMITED, BURGESS HILL

POSITION: TECHNICAL CONSULTANT ? NETWORK MIGRATIONS

DURATION: JULY to SEPTEMBER 2005, CONTRACT

 

In July, I took a three month contract with Sussex based network consultancy www.rteam.co.uk in order to upgrade the networks of the following companies: www.Facelift.co.uk Drey Precision Engineering, www.FMSLtd.co.uk www.EmcelFilters.co.uk www.Photek.com Challenge Educational Services and www.Ricochet.co.uk (makers of Supernanny, Risking it All et al) and www.ApexManufacturing.co.uk. The work for these companies included:

 

Rolling Out Dell / Fuji servers across NT networks to AD with Exchange 5.5 to 2003

Setting up of firewalls and DMZs? Fortigate, Checkpoint, Watchguard and ZyWall

Active Directory migration, creation, troubleshooting and monitoring

Public Folder, OWA, and OMA creation / design

Running the help desk for the coordination of the systems with RDP and VNC

Setting up multi-site Terminal Servers in 2000 / 20003 including printing

Full integration of anti-virus products, DATs et ceterae

Where necessary working in French (Challenge Education) and German (Ricochet TV)

Installation and management of switches, cabling et ceterae

Installation and management of UPS ? predominantly APC Powerchutes

Backups to Travan and DAT with, predominantly, Backup Exec

 

A typical project was the upgrade of Apex Manufacturing. This firm had 30 PCs and 2 Compaq Proliant ML350 Servers on 2 sites running on a NT PDC with an MK database running on 2000 Server. I planned and upgraded to AD on an SBS 2003 box and migrated the SIDs / permissions , Mailboxes (from Mail Enable to Exchange with Outlook 2003 clients) and the other hardware and software settings on all servers and PCs. I then installed 10 printers and set up the redundant NT box as an Office Terminal Server with printing for the firm?s mobile users. Total time including handover and monitoring ? 3 days.

 

When in the firm?s head office, I also acted as a third line escalation point for any networking or general IT is staff who needed assistance.

 

APRIL 2003 TO JULY 2005

 

Until July 1st, I ran my own Sussex based IT Network Support company - Crawley Network Services - and also worked as a senior technical trainer for London based www.britannia-it.co.uk .

 

As a support engineer and consultant, my work with local firms included:

Security (Penetration) Testing and consultancy

Many Project Based Rollouts and Upgrades. A typical example would be a small two-weekend project for a firm in Lille, France, upgrading their systems from NT4 to 2003 including Exchange 5.5 to 2003 and installation of Citrix Meta XP and Checkpoint NG.

SLAs for small, local firms? networks

Local hardware fixes and backup services for Windows networks

Exchange 5.5 / 2003 administration

Remote Assistance

Maintenance and control of inventory of both hardware and software (licenses).

Hardware experience includes x86 PCs, Routers and Switches (DSL / Cisco) and Servers (IBM, Dell and HP)

 

 

At Britannia, I trained students from varied backgrounds ? from total beginner to senior systems Administrators for :

 

  • COMPTIA A+ Hardware, A+ Software and N+ with Microsoft?s MCSE (2003) track
  • XP (including ghosted roll-outs, unattended installations with Sysprep / Riprep etc)

SEPTEMBER 2001 TO MARCH 2003

SOUTH AFRICA

 

After my contract with Ford, Germany (below), I decided to take some time out to gain a Private Pilots License and I did this in South Africa. Whilst there, I married an SA Citizen and I started an IT Network Support and Training company in Pretoria. This ran very well and in early 2003 my wife and I decided to move back to the UK with our two young children.

 

COMPANY: FORD MOTOR COMPANY, GERMANY

POSITION: PROJECT MANAGER - EURO CURRENCY PROJECT

DURATION: JUNE 2000 to AUGUST 2001. 14 Months. Contract.

 

As one of a Europe based triumvirate of Finance ? IT Project Managers on this hugely complicated and important project, we managed to transform all of Ford Europe?s Finance-IT systems to a point of Euro currency compliance. This contract involved:

 

- · <!--[endif]-->Massive network infrastructure planning and much negotiation over budgeting and timelines with senior management Europe wide in English, French and German.

- · <!--[endif]-->Supervision of, on occasion, over 100 programmers, IT support and accounting staff.

- · <!--[endif]-->Designing both verbal and written communication plans for all Ford?s European staff base.

- · <!--[endif]-->Support for the end-user environment and support for the user community.

 

APRIL 2000

VIBRANT-IT. MUMBAI, INDIA

STUDENT - MCSE (NT4).

 

COMPANY: MELLON BANK US (London Office)

POSITION: PROJECT MANAGER

DURATION: APRIL 1998 to JANUARY 2000. 21 Months. Contract.

 

This contract was my first major contract back in the City after University. As the Project Manager on this major US Bank?s Y2K Project, I was awarded three extensions and two generous loyalty bonuses. Duties included:

 

  • Designing, building and maintaining the stand-alone test environment, replicating over 40 mission-critical banking applications including NT 4 and GEAC?s Smartstream
  • Training of end-user accounting staff for software testing
  • Necessity to become very rapidly familiar with over 100 IT systems
  • Responsibility for all systems testing
  • Responsible for liaison with the FSA, SFA (NY) and British Bankers Association at the highest levels.
  • Extensive UK wide liaison with major clients including Nationwide, Halifax, CSFB and Lloyds Bank Capital Markets
  • Involvement with the bank?s world-wide migration to PRINCE2
  • Liaison with other I.S. specialists within the Mellon group, to ensure effective communication of system requirements and changes.
  • Working closely with Functional Managers to ensure an IT understanding of their business requirements.
  • Managing other assigned European IT projects, including rollout of upgrades, system changes etc and user training.

Working as a networking technician for Clerical Medicals head office, I gained experience of the NT4 client/server environment, Unisys A-Series mainframes, corporate printers and GroupWise.

POSITION: Undergraduate reading Single Honours Russian Studies.

For two years, I enjoyed reading Russian Studies at Bristol, however with both a year abroad in Siberia and a £10,000 loan beckoning I decided to return to the world of work after this two year mature-student sabbatical.
