Senior Support Engineer/Project manager

Since completing my Degree I have worked in the Information Technology sector as a support technician. Over the last 4 or so years I have been a senior engineer working in a range of challenging environments within London including Lloyds of London, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 & 5, BskyB, The Labor Party, Conservative Central office and 10 Downing Street. As such, I have built up a considerable bank of technical experience and developed my interpersonal skills.

Previous jobs

2004 - 2001   Peaktime UK
Employed as Senior Engineer, my role at Peaktime UK was to assist in the management of the IT department. My responsibilities were many and varied as outlined below:

  • Support of in house users - on a range of operating systems [Windows and Red Hat Linux 8 and 9] using a range of office applications and bespoke utilities;
  • Support of in house video encoding [MPEG1] and its subsequent storage [on RAISE servers and later on a mass storage Sony Petasite];
  • Administration of a large SQL database and the daily integration of BARB TV viewing figures on to this database;
  • Administration of backroom servers and applications - from Domain servers through Exchange services to email security and File servers;
  • Administration and support of a LAN run over Cisco managed switches and a WAN based on ATM and ASX1000 technology;
  • The Project Management of client installations, from WAN line procurement through to installations, networking and client training. Much of this work involved the liaison with client ITS departments as well as with Admin. departments at both client sites and network service providers such as Colt and BT;
  • The support of all client sites - this included the support of NT workstations running over a WAN and the subsequent fault diagnosis and resolution of hardware, software and network issues.
  • As Peaktime is a technology driven company, I was one of the main communication links with the clients. As such, training and product development was an important part of my role as well as maintaining good relations with the clients.

    Due to the small size of the technical team [two senior and one junior member] and the large number of client sites, it was important to be able to work with initiative and to learn quickly. What's more, a great deal of team work and flexibility was essential in order to deal with often difficult and impatient high level clients. Further, the nature of the data collection process meant that scheduled downtime was restricted to between the hours of 02:00am and 05:00am ? as such, much of the work was carried out over night ? with such a small team, co-operation was vital to the smooth running of the department.

    In my last year at Peaktime I gained experience in a variety of alternative Operating Systems including Red Hat Linux 9.0 and Mac OSX.
  • 2001 - 2000   DSML/XL Brockbank
    DSML [Denham Syndicate Management Ltd ? Lloyds] became XLBrockbank in January 2001. Up until this point the company had been a small insurance underwriting syndicate consisting of around 70 users in two offices and at the Lloyds of London building. My role at the company included the first and second line support of all users as well as a substantial degree of third line support. After the merger of XLB and DSML, my role was mainly concerned with the merger of systems and the migration of the DSML network and users to that of XLB
    1998 - 1999   Western Geo/Baker Hughes
    In 1998 and 1999 I worked for a large international oil exploration company [17,000 users in total] in a team of 15 support personnel. The support catered for all PC related issues in house and on Rigs and Exploration vessels. As such, my role consisted of first, second and third line support in this busy department.
